My Chickens & Quail

Yes, like any farm, there are animals on mine. Even a micro-farm can have live-stock on the small scale. I run a "Chicken Business", where I hatch heritage and rare breed chickens for other small time farmers, backyard poultry keepers and enthusiast alike.

My own flock consists of special hens all raised from chicks by me (which is an amazing experience). They are sweet, and full of individual personality! I have about 12 hens right now, and a few juveniles. Since many of the hens are "ornamental" I wont quite be getting a dozen eggs each day, this is fine for my family's needs, with a few to spare to other family and friends.

I want to add some laying quail into the mix, possibly in the spring, building them a separate living space and outdoor run. By next summer, I hope to have quite the gorgeous egg basket. With fall livestock sales just around the corner it will be hard to resist picking up a few birds. I still want to add some Marans for dark chocolate eggs and an olive egger for deep green-olive eggs. Maybe a Wyandotte for pink.

I'll be posting plenty on my chickens as well as care and management. For more on chickens and my chick business visit Summer Girl Chicks' Blog or Facebook.
